Tá Oíche Shamhna idir bliain amháin Ghaelach agus an bhliain dar gcionn. Tá sí taobh amuigh den ghnáth-am ar fad, dar lenár sinsear. Níl na gnáthrialacha i bhfeidhm ar chor ar bith, agus creidtear go bhfuil saoirse ag na spioraid agus ag anamacha na marbh filleadh ar an saol seo.
Is iomaí nós a bhaineann leis an bhféile ársa seo.
Beidh Aonach Na Leabhar ar ais linn go luath. Cosúil le gach bliain eile tá rogha iontach de leabhair ar fáil ó phraghsanna chomh íseal le deich cent!
The Aonach Na Leabhar will be back with us soon. As usual there are loads of great books to suit all ages and the prices start from as low as ten cent!
Bhí fuinneamh sa stoirm a éalaigh aréir.
Aréir oíche Nollaig na mBan,
As gealt-teach iargúlta ‘tá laistiar den ré
Is do scréach tríd an spéir chughainn ‘na gealt
Gur ghíosc geataí comharsan mar ghogallach gé,
Gur bhúir abhainn slaghdánach mar tharbh,
Gur mhúchadh mo choinneal mar bhuille ar mo bhéal
A las ‘na splanc obann an fhearg.
Ba mhaith liom go dtiocfadh an stoirm sin féin
An oíche go mbeadsa go lag
Ag filleadh abhaile ó rince an tsaoil
Is solas an pheaca ag dul as,
Go líonfaí gach neomat le liúirigh ón spéir,
Go ndéanfaí den domhan scuaine scread,
Is ná cloisfinn an ciúnas ag gluaiseacht fám dhéin,
Ná inneall an ghluaisteáin ag stad.
The 6th of January is the date for the old Irish tradition of
Nollaig Na mBan (Women's Christmas), or Nollaig Bheag (Little Christmas).
Lá Fhéile Bríde, 1 Feabhra, also marks the ancient frstival of Imbolc and the start of spring. In recent years the tradition of giving a book in Irish to those we love on that day has really begun to spread. Why not promote this celebration of our tradition of writing in our own language through giving a bronntanas/féirín of a book in Irish to your children; Irish is the first non-classical language (ie not Latin or Ancient Greek) to have be written in Western Europe. Many book sellers both on the Main Street and online, offer great discounts for it.
Visit our Nuacht section and LeabhraFeabhra.com for more information on the discounts this year.
Is é Lá Fhéile Bríde an chéad lá den Earrach in Éirinn agus fiú roimh teacht na Críostaíochta ba féile mhór a bhí ann ab ainm Imbolc, nó Imbolg. Tagann an t-ainm sin ón bhfocal bolg, mar is ag an t-am sin den bhliain a bíonns caoirigh ar tí uain nua a bhreit.
Mar a cheanglaítear an tseamróg le Naomh Pádraig, tá ainm Naomh Bríd ceangailte leis an chros bheag a dhéantar de luachair. Tá clú ar Bhríd i measc naoimh na hÉireann agus is í an dara duine acu i ndiaidh Phádraig.
Ag gabháil thart leis an mBrídeog Lá Fhéile Bríde, alt ar Tuairisc.ie
Lá Fhéile Bríd marks the official, and traditional, start of spring in Ireland. Even before the coming of Christianity there was a major festival at this time of the year, called Imbolc, or Imbolg.
Saint Bríd is one of our three national saints and is second only to Saint Pádraig in status and fame. She is as closely associated with the Crosóg Bhríde as he is with the seamróg (shamrock).
Cráifeog Bhríde: A Naomh Bríd, cabhrigh linn a bheith cineálta, cneasta, cosúil leatsa. Áiméan.
Lúireach Phádraig
Críost liom, Críost romham,
Críost i mo dhiaidh, Críost istigh ionam,
Críost fúm, Críost os mo chionn,
Críost ar mo lámh dheis, Críost ar mo lámh chlé,
Críost i mo luí dom, Críost i mo sheasamh dom,
Críost i gcroí gach duine atá ag cuimhneamh orm,
Críost i mbéal gach duine a labhraíonn liom,
Críost i ngach súil a fhéachann orm,
Críost i ngach cluas a éisteann liom.
Saint Patrick's Breastplate
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ below me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my waking,
Christ in the heart of all who think of me,
Christ in the mouth of all who speak to me,
Christ in every eye that looks at me,
Christ in Every ear that listens to me.

An traidisiún is mó a bhaineann leis an mbliain bhisigh ná gur féidir le
bean fear a iarraidh le
pósadh ar an 29 Feabhra. Deirtear gur tháinig an traidisiún sin ón am a raibh Naomh Bríde agus Naomh Pádraig in Éirinnn sa chúigiú haois. Dúirt Bríd le Pádraig gur seafóid a bhí ann go gcaithfeadh na mná fanacht tamall fada nó go n-iarrfadh na fir iad a phósadh. Dá bharr sin, thug Naomh Pádraig cead do na mná an cheist mhór a chur lá amháin gach 4 bliana, ar an 29 Feabhra. Tá daoine amhrasach faoi sin mar níor chualamar trácht ar an nós arís go dtí an 19 aois ach cibé fáth atá taobh thiar don traidisiún seo is féidir linn a bheith cinnte gur
nós Gaelach é ar aon chaoi.
Ireland is where a quirky leap-year tradition originates; the idea that on the extra day that year, 29 Feabhra, women can propose marriage to a man. It is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when Naomh Bríd complained to Naomh Pádraig about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. Knowledge of this tradition spread abroad, like some of our other cultural practices with the waves of emigration caused by the long years of colonial conquest and rule. While the idea has never become a very common custom it can put a real leap in the step of any potential recipient of the big question!
